Alston Kam

Alston is one of those athletes that takes cues on board very quickly. As a result his progress has been impressive to say the least. It feels like he learns a new skill or is hitting a new PB weekly. During Thursday’s CrossFit Gymnastics class it took him exactly 4 minutes to nail the kipping ring dip!
Regardless of Alston’s natural athleticism, he works hard and listens diligently to coach cues and tips. Annoyingly, he can also go out all night then come in fresh as a daisy and workout as if he hadn’t had 10 VBs!
Well done Alston!

Oona Väisänen

There is no better writer in the English language to describe Oona than William Shakespeare: “Though she be but little, she is fierce!”
I was passing through one of Coach Kat’s classes just around Christmas and witnessed Oona deadlift 100kgs with ease. Everyone looked around with incredulity then erupted in applause. It was one of those great CrossFit moments.
Oona attended my fundamentals class over a year ago and seeing her improve the way she has makes me very proud to be part of this gym and community. If you ever wonder where Oona is, just look for the woman dressed all in black!
Well done Oona!

Lore Garcia

Hailing from the land of Cervantes, Rioja wine, El Cid, flamenco, jamón serrano, and endless sun, Lore brings Spanish flair and passion to every class. As an athlete, Lore’s best quality is her willingness to learn. Lore always listens attentively to the coach for cues to make sure she is moving well and this enthusiasm translates well to WODs as I’ve never seen her give any less than 100%. Nonetheless, athlete does not maketh woman and personality is where Lore truly shines. Lore will welcome new members with open arms and take them under her wing, whether they are ready for it or not! Lore is also part of the Gales Gardens “Wednesday Crew” and chips in with some top bantz.
¡Enhorabuena Lore!

It’s only been a short time I’ve been coaching at CrossFit London but every time I’ve seen Stephen he has put more than a 100% into each workout and, to be honest, seeing that much effort being put in has given me a kick in the ass for my own training!!!
Keep up the hardwork and
Sorry about the pic dude lol

Dave Maher-Bouzguenda

My MotW goes to Dave. If you don’t know Dave, you must be living under a rock! I remember when he came in for the first time and discovered snatches… what a nemesis. Unable to do them even with a PVC he practiced hard, slowly moving through all the bars we have eventually graduating to a 20kg one and now even though he still struggles in a squat he’s built a reasonable weight on the power snatch. Always enthusiastic, supportive in partner WODs and never bites his tongue is what we all love about Dave.
Just make sure you don’t start setting up for your WOD on his ‘spot’… you’ll be in big trouble. Well done, Dave. Well deserved!

Vivienne Avey

Viv is one of our lovely long standing morning crew, who turns up with her eyes partly closed but smiling away.

You tend to find her in a corner with her twin Georgina catching up on the gossip!

However, she’s hard working and never makes a fuss and is forever trying to improve on her weaknesses; this week I got to watch her get her kipping pull ups mid WOD! Proud Coach!!

Keep it up, lady

Kim Mirren

IMG_1676
Ever present in my gymnastics skills class, it’s safe to say that Kim has drunk the CrossFit KoolAid and is intoxicated with it. The reasons why Kim started CrossFit are twofold: to get better at surfing and to someday beat her brother and sister in law in a WOD. The way Kim has been improving, that won’t be too far away!
There are two qualities in Kim as an athlete that caught my eye. Firstly, her determination and coach-ability. Kim is always willing to listen and do whatever scale necessary to get better. Rather than feel daunted with the amount of work needed to put in, she views everything I throw at her as a challenge. Secondly, Kim embraces the community aspect of CrossFit. She started a Whatsapp group with the other L1s when no one knew each other to coordinate classes and for general CrossFit bantz. Kim was quick to recognise that the community, possibly the most important aspect of CrossFit, keeps everyone accountable to each other. Kim’s attitude is an example to all!

Maria Jose Peroza

This week’s member of the week is Maria Jose Peroza.  Maria has trained with us regularly since she started CrossFit two years ago.  Two things really stand out about Maria: first, her determination, often surprising herself with her progress and, second, she invariably has a big smile on her face, no matter how awful the WOD is!

Diogo Baltazar

Diogo arrives early for Metcon class, and then usually spends 10 minutes casually strolling around the room – on his hands! For someone with his hard-won skill, competence and engine; he’s more than earned bragging rights! But Diogo is quietly awesome in the way he goes about things. Those handstand strolls always get people asking him for tips on gymnastics, which he gladly gives with patience and encouragement.

Love ya’, Diogo! Enjoy your Member of the Week status.

Yaad Hassan Gorodniuk

image_123986672

We’ve had some members quick to take their shirts off in a class but this week’s MOTW goes to the quickest we’ve ever seen: Yaad Hassan Gorodniuk.

Yaad is a mainstay in my Wednesday L2 class at Gales Gardens and is usually the progenitor of bantz. CrossFit is all about hard work and commitment but Yaad also serves as a reminder that we can have tons of fun while training hard. The coaches and I have never seen someone so quick to take the piss out of themselves.

His constant attempts at a love affair with married member Danny Steadman is hilarious to witness as demonstrated by these pictures.

Keep persisting, Yaad!
